Flying through life

"Dad, I've survived a lot. But being inside that twister... I've never been so scared in my life. I couldn't see anything, and things were bouncing off me, I didn't have any control. And I know it could have been the wind, but all of a sudden I was moving toward the truck and it felt like I was willing myself to do it. I felt like I was flying..."
- Clark Kent (before his awareness of his ability to fly)
The gang that gathered once a week to watch Smallville - these were and still are, at least until tonight (our last episode as a group), some of the best experiences of my college life. For my birthday this year I was graciously given the Superman Box DVD set - very very very nice I must add! I love it! One of the best gives ever I do believe. The story of Superman is very interesting because I believe it strikes a cord in the hearts and minds of us all. Granted, the story may be a little cheesy and for those of you who don't like Superman, well, you'll just have to bear with us - although you should at least make some connection with the heart of the tale. I enjoy Smallville so much because of the character development of Superman - knowing who he will become...who he is destined to be...and yet wanting small things to possibly happen differently - even though you know they can't, is quite interesting. Superman has an innate sense of justice and the drive to help others. More than that he represents the pure heart we are all seeking in our lives. Even those of us who do such evil and are consumed with such selfishness realize deep down that this is not the person we wish to be. Inside all of us is this desire to love and to help and to pursue righteousness for the sense of something beyond ourselves. This is a feeling that is deeper inside some more than others - but each of us has it. Those who say they do not are lying or have been hurt in such a way that they have consciously decided to turn their back on this voice from the heart. You know what - I'm digressing...
What If ind interesting about Superman, besides his ability to fly, is the dilemna of his life. His desire to be truly known, to be himself completely that constantly battles with the feeling of using his gifts in the responsibility destined for him. I think we all have two desires - the desire to seek our own Glory or at least to rise to the occasion, help others, and be the hero. We do not necessarily seek this, what I will call glory, for ouselves (though some do) but we are gifted with talents for truly helping an dbringing life to others and yet we are burdened by this responsibility because the other side of the coin just desires to be an ordinary person and live an ordinary life. It's a classic theme throughout life. Clark is given all these abilities and yet all he really wants is love and the peace of a life with family and friends - the ordinary guy where people can understand him for who he really is - and yet he is placed in a posiition of great power where turning his back on this other life could cost others so much
I'm kinda tired of writing so I think you get the point right? Hope so. I like Smallville and the story of Superman - especially the thought of seeing Superman as a person who has his own inner struggles and conflicts. Too often we see those in places of height and power as perfect - not realizing they need just as much grace and love in their life as we do in ours. Just because you're in the top spot doesn't mean that you are invulnerable to the pains of those below you...
