My Father and His Son
An open letter to my Father,
Though I don’t recall whether it was a day or a week later, though I don’t recall the time of day, or what I was wearing, or where I was going, though I don’t recall whether it was a good day or another bad one…I do remember my father’s words and the look in his eyes. He caught me in the doorway of my room, looked at me, and though he is taller we were the same height for a moment, looking not only as friend and kin, counselor and counseled, shame and love, but true father and son. He stood there, patiently, staring through my failure and my shame, to catch me for a moment and bring me back into reality, he said, “Everything’s going to be okay. Everything’s gonna be okay. Daddy loves you.” This he said, and then hugged me standing in the doorway. Overwhelmed I gave a false, “I know” and attempted to turn back and ignore reality once more. Yet, I will never forget that moment. It was a moment I constantly remember because he, like so many other times in my life, was right...and he, like everytime before, was right there.
...I will finish this in a few days
