Now Reading: A New Kind of Christian

New Kind

I joined a Thursday night bible study discussing Brian McLaren's new book, A New Kind of Christian. You can check out the website www.anewkindofchristian.com. I began reading this book this summer. Unfortunately I borrowed it from my friend Karla...and had to return it before I left for KC - since she had borrowed it from a friend. Therefore I borrowed it from a friend who borrowed it from a friend. who hopefully, hadn't borrowed it from a friend. I've only been to the study one week - but I really enjoyed the honesty, authenticity, and dynamics of the group. I feel like it is a group I fit well with. I wish I could meet this week - but I have a 5th grade musical that requires my attention (Go Mr. Anderson's class!) The book I really find interesting - though some of the points are a bit beyond me right at the moment. The book discusses ideas of the emerging culture and postmodernism as far as how it pertains to christianity and our daily lives. What is our bible study about? Well good question. I would say it's totally about the book - though last week had the themes of the book involved, and that's about it. Basically we are reading the book and letting it spark conversations about what it means to be a christian in our culutre, postmodernism, and whatever else comes to our minds from our hearts. Overall, we are kinda discussing what it means to be in authentic relationship and community with those around us. I love to struggle with these kind of questions with others. Though we have no answers, and we're probably asking the wrong questions, we belong to a community...and as I've seen in my own life, and the life of a dear friend long gone (at this point) community plays a vital role in our lives, whether we are willing to accept that or not. We need community.
