Half Marathon
This is a post where I definitely want comments...from those of you who are constant commenters to those of you who check and have never made your presence knows, feel free to comment under other if you don't feel like throwing a name out. I have an issue about running that I need some counsel upon.
This upcoming Saturday I have registered to run in a half marathon in Boston. I'm sure the weather will be fine and I plan on getting some new shoes early this week and try to break them in...but here's the two issues, first is shoes - second is the actual running. When I was 22 or so I picked up and ran a 7mile race without much problem. Also, in decent time. However, I was twenty two...I haven't trained at all for this thing, other than what running I put in this week and I've never ran that far before. So, those of you who know me, do you think I can pick up and run 13miles or not? Second, what's your thoughts on shoes? My new balances are horrible and if I wear them I'm guaranteed a blister...Marathon sports tests you for the perfect shoe, but if I get them this last - can I break them in enough?
thoughts please...let me know if I can do this, one way or another I'm going to do it, so maybe the question is, how much pain will I endure? Jack Bauer could do it I bet

i bought my last pair of running shoes from marathon sports and i wasn't overly impressed. like you mention, their main selling point is their "custom fit" test... which basically consists of you walking 10 steps and them telling you if you overpronate. it's a cool store because it's literally at the finish line of the boston marathon... but otherwise i think it's really overpriced (shoes start around $90 for your basic running shoe).
you've probably been running long enough to make a good decision about your shoes -- i really doubt their salespeople could give you any additional insight.
I say go for it... You have never gone in to anything with out thought and prayer.. If you thought you would seriously be hurt or embarresed by finishing last, you would not do it.. I know! At tleast I like to tell my self I kinow you! AS far as the shoes Can you wear them all week? Can you wear wicked socks and cotton / wool ones like you would hicking as to not get blisters? You are not that old and you are putting way to much weight on being 25! Grandaddy always said "age it a staight of mine" be your grandaddy and think young.. be a reppert!
Good luck.. I love you.
mom

Ty, like your closing words say, "your going to do it."
You've been going to the Gym. You've never been unfit.
Drink a beer, eat pasta and take it easy the day before.
If you get shoes tommorrow you can break them in by the weekend.
I want to know your time. I need some competition.
Your representing the Midwest, well not really, but just for nostalgia lets say so.
Wish you the best.
you go for it nephew, cause its a sure bet your 63 year old uncle would not make the first 1/4 mile
Shoes: It might be okay if you get shoes now and run in them all this week. But definately don't wear them for the first time the day of the half marathon. I've heard some bad stories, and messed up feet as a result of shoes that hadn't been broken in. But you also don't want to run 13miles in shoes that won't provide any support. So go get them right now and start running. And, I totally think you'll be able to do it. Go get 'em tiger!
Well as an avide running shoe wearing person I am in need of a new shoe myself and am looking for something a little out of the ordinary. I am a very picky person as are you with shoes. I have been shopping for shoes for the past few months and still have no clue was to get. I am looking between the maybe the "Air Coos" by Nike or the "Air Zoom Hayward" Also by Nike. or the "a3 Gigaride" by Adidas. All are great shoes although you may disagree as do I on some of the color choices on them but overall I think are great shoes. Light weight and breathable for your foot and they might increase your footstrike. Thats my thoughts you might want to read up on them and see how you like them. Talk to you later and good luck. - Your Bro - Mike
just go for it. better than have a life full of what ifs. but... being 1/4 italian, i'd say go for a nice glass of chianti with the pasta... beer is for any day. wine is made for pasta :)
shoes of choice: new balance or adidas always.
oh, and my 24 y.o. (girl) cousin recently won a marathon for her age division in GA.... and she even got a lower time than the 3rd place guy. she's awesome ;)
Tyler: From your Aunt Martha the former shoe salesperson and New Balance and Nike retailer, go with the New Balance. They started as a running shoe company, they make narrows and I remember I think you have a narrow foot. Also, make SURE you do break them in this week. Wear them some every day or you will pay for it. aunt m
Went with Asics GEL-LANDRETHâ„¢ II (TN534) for around 90 bones...got a skimpy pair of running shorts and some sweet sox. Marathon sports did a pretty interesting job sizing things up, definitely cut out the whole middle part of trying a bunch of shoes and picking out the ones that "look cool" Dont really like the look, but they feel good. Guy had some good running tips, liked the fact that he told me I was a very neutral runner (in terms of pronation) and my form looked very effecient! That's Good stuff
you can try this link...don't know if it works:

Hi ty fi -- I love New Balance, too. It really depends on your foot, though. I would strongly recommend going to Fleet Feet, as I have had AMAZING customer service from them and have been buying my shoes there since I was 16. Go to their website and see if there's a location close to you. They'll watch you run, assess your stride, the curve of your feet, the way your foot falls. They're amazing.
Do NOT run a lot this week!! What is everyone thinking? You could run a couple of SLOW, EASY miles the first few days of the week (as in 3 miles), but DON'T put in any long runs, and don't run at all the last few days before the race. Save it all for the half.
Lucky ran a half with absolutely NO training last year. If he can do it, you can do it, gal-pal.
so what did you decide with the shoes? man, i really can't keep up with the changing pics for your header. But i like them all.
Ty,
I would definitely run a couple miles prior to the race. Its good for your breathing. I have started to run some, and the worst part about it was how much my throat hurt after the first time. There was a huge difference between the 1st & 2nd time running as far as how my throat hurt and breathing in general. As far as shoes, I would recommend getting a pair of those roller shoes that have wheels that come out from the bottom like an airplane. That would definitely help your time! have fun and don't walk!

You know what happens to me in a resturant. I look around and see all the people I can take if we were to get into a fight. I look at all the angles. I can already snap necks in a heartbeat. Like the old guy said from the Burbs 10 months in the bush and I could snap your neck in a heartbeat. As far as 10 miles well lets not make the super soldier tired. I dont think I could make it this spring break but Ill make it soon. - Your Bro Mike
