I am just now starting Life of Pi as I am approaching the three quarters finish line to Nouwen's Reaching Out. Which is a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone. Especially if you need to hear yourself referred to as "the beloved." It's just an amazing way of viewing life and approaching the boundaries and potential God has for each of us. I haven't yet cracked Blue Like Jazz but am planning to this weekend as I, yet again, go on another journey out of town. I hear its another amazing one. In that light I thought I might add a small description of each - for those of you looking to add another book to your list. If it's anything like mine - it's already long enough to take pictures of other solar systems.
Life of Pi
Meet Pi Patel, a young man on the cusp of adulthood when fate steps in and hastens his lessons in maturity. En route with his family from their home in India to Canada, their cargo ship sinks, and Pi finds himself adrift in a lifeboat -- alone, save for a few surviving animals, some of the very same animals Pi's zookeeper father warned him would tear him to pieces if they got a chance. But Pi's seafaring journey is about much more than a struggle for survival. It becomes a test of everything he's learned -- about both man and beast, their creator, and the nature of truth itself.
Blue Like Jazz
"I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn't resolve. . . . I used to not like God because God didn't resolve. But that was before any of this happened." In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.
We've got a book fair at our school next week. Though it's mostly geared towards the elementary kiddos...there were some adult books as well for the teachers. One that looked interesting was called An Amatuer Marriage. I'll check it out more on Monday and think about a purchase. Oh, and Limony Snicket...or the publishers looking to make money - had a book called "The Blank Book." In essence it's just a journal but it looked fun to write in once my old black one gets filled!
